A Powerful Gospel Stage Play About One Woman's Journey
from Grit to Glory…
Two young sisters discover their grandmother Magee’s diary while waiting for her to get dressed. As they secretly read it, the dramatic and emotional story of Hattie Clark (Magee) unfolds on stage, beginning in 1950.
At 17, Hattie lives with her bitter and verbally abusive mother, Deloris, above a bar. Despite enduring verbal abuse and neglect, Hattie forms a deep bond with Naomi, a preacher’s daughter. Their friendship is tested when Hattie becomes pregnant, leading to heartbreak, abandonment by the baby’s father, and Naomi’s temporary exit from her life.
Deloris’ life spirals due to her relationship with the her no good boyfriend named CJ, leading to her arrest. Hattie narrowly escapes CJ’s attempted abuse thanks to Bowtee, the bar owner. Later, a drunken Deloris kills CJ in a dramatic bar room brawl.
Years pass, and Hattie, much like her mother, falls into destructive cycles of alcohol and unhealthy relationships, culminating in a suicide attempt. Her healing journey begins with help from Bowtee and Ednah, and a life-changing visit from Naomi. Reunited, the friends reconnect spiritually, leading to Hattie’s transformation.
She recovers, attends law school, and becomes a judge—Judge Hattie Clark-Winner. The diary reading ends with the sisters understanding Magee’s incredible journey of pain, perseverance, and redemption. With all its twists and turns this roller coaster of emotions will leave you with much to talk about and a sense of gratitude for having watched. “The Blacker the Berry…” is a must-see stage production.
